A South Carolina Democrat caught on tape making disparaging, racist remarks about her White constituents is under pressure to resign.

Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Krystle Matthews is resisting calls from Republicans as well as some Democrats for her resignation.

Matthews is a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate who is challenging Republican incumbent Sen. Tim Scott. Matthews was recorded making pejorative remarks about her constituents, especially White constituents.

She was reportedly surreptitiously taped by a Project Veritas journalist and was caught on tape speaking disparagingly of her constituents — specifically White constituents — in a series of remarks secretly recorded by activist group Project Veritas.

“You ought to know who you’re dealing with,” Matthews said during the taped conversation. “You’ve got to treat them like s—. That’s the only way they’ll respect you.”

GOP officials labeled Matthews’ comments leaked by Project Veritas “racist” but the embattled Black candidate denies she is a racist.

“I said what I said,” she exclaimed, demanding the undercover journalism project release the entire recording of her remarks.

“I have no biases towards a certain ethnic group,” Matthews remarked. “I expressed my disgust for Black legislators who exhibit the same hypocrisy as MAGA Republicans. This is why I am challenging MAGA’s favorite Black legislator, Tim Scott.” She was referring to the political movement Make America Great Again initiated by former President Donald Trump.

Democrats, including Joe Cunningham, a candidate for governor, agreed Thursday with state Rep. Justin Bamberg’s published opinion that Matthews is “toxic.”

“If any of our white counterparts had said the same thing with regards to Blacks, the minority community, including myself, would be up in arms calling for that member’s immediate resignation,” Bamberg also said in his online commentary.

Issues other than perceptions of racism may further dog Matthews’ campaign. She reportedly spoke with a prison inmate about having criminals help fund her campaign with “dope boy money.” Matthews also proposed having Democrats register as Republican and run for office. She opined “secret sleepers” are “the only way you’re gonna change the dynamics in South Carolina.”

Aside from the issues, the upstart Democrat’s likelihood of defeating a two-time incumbent Republican in the overwhelmingly conservative state equal those of a snowball’s chance in the devil’s neighborhood.
