Local authorities in the Chiùre district of Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, announced on Monday that a staggering 72 children are unaccounted for following recent terrorist attacks.

Albertina Ussene, the provincial director of Gender, Children, and Social Action in Nampula, assured that efforts are actively being made to locate these missing children and reunite them with their families.

Official reports reveal that the surge in attacks has compelled 67 321 individuals to flee their homes.

The Mozambican government attributes these incursions to the movement of small terrorist groups, which have shifted from their bases in southern Cabo Delgado after a period of relative calm, as reported by Club of Mozambique.

President Filipe Nyusi asserted last week that jihadists had specifically targeted Chiùre with the intention of abducting children.

Shockingly, over 60% of those displaced by these recent jihadist assaults are children, and the closure of 129 schools has been documented in a UN report.

The conflict in Mozambique has already displaced one million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and has resulted in approximately 4,000 fatalities, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED).

“Their preferred method of killing is beheading people.”
