At a major airport, Nigerian authorities discovered 7,000 donkey penises after becoming suspicious of the packages’ odour, reports Mail Online.
Customs officers at Lagos, Nigeria’s Murtala Muhammed airport discovered 16 sacks containing the donkey penises that were being shipped illegally to Hong Kong.
The animal parts were discovered in sacks in the animal export section of the airport, according to Sambo Dangaladima, the customs controller, who spoke to the BBC.
He claimed that the bags were emitting a pungent scent that suspicious customs officers noticed, leading them to open the packages and discover the 7,000 donkey penises inside.
Illegal trade of donkey parts, including the skin and penises of the animal, is widespread from Nigeria to China.
China uses the animal parts to create a traditional medicine known as ejiao.
The Nigerian Customs Service reported in June that they had discovered 3,712 bits of donkey skin and three 100kg bags containing donkey genitalia at an airport.
Four suspects were detained in March of last year while attempting to smuggle 3,712 pieces of skin and 2,754 donkey penises.
According to officials, between 2012 and 2018, Nigeria lost over £6 billion to the illegal trade of trafficking donkey parts to China.
It is against the law in Nigeria to murder donkeys for their body parts and smuggle them abroad, and yet this illegal practice persists.
The Donkey Dealers Association of Nigeria implored the Nigerian government this week to arrest and charge those who murder donkeys indiscriminately and smuggle their animal parts out of the nation.
The charity claims to have spent millions in donkey breeding, but traffickers are undermining their initiatives.
