- New technology rolled out across Australia will help those addicted to the pokies
- System will identify those who signed up to be excluded from gambling venues
- Cameras will scan faces of those in pokies rooms and alert staff if need be
- Currently onus is on wait staff to recognise those wanting to stop gambling
Everyone who enters the pokies room of a NSW pub or club will have their picture taken in an attempt to stop problem gamblers – with the high-tech system expected to be rolled out across Australia.
Venues will have access to the new facial recognition technology, which uses cameras to scan the faces of those heading to the poker machines.
For those wanting to kick their gambling habits, they can sign up to a self-exclusion system. In NSW, there is already 5,000 gamblers on this list.
The new technology is then able to compare the face of those heading to the pokies to those signed up to the exclusion system, with staff immediately alerted if there’s a match.
The new system is similar to other facial recognition technology which is creeping into everyday life across Australia.
At the moment, those wanting to quit gambling can apply to be excluded from certain venues, but the pressure is on hospitality staff to recognise the punters.
