Tyler Jay Boebert, the son of controversial Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (R-CO), was arrested on Tuesday afternoon and charged with 22 crimes, including multiple felonies—the latest stumble for the far-right Trump ally’s family as she attempts to run for re-election in a new district
KEY FACTS
Police in Rifle, Colorado said Boebert, 18, was arrested in connection to a “recent string of vehicle trespass and property thefts in Rifle.”
Boebert is facing a total of 22 charges, according to arrest records from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, including conspiracy to commit a felony, four counts of criminal possession of identification documents and four counts of criminal possession of financial devices, as well as more than a dozen misdemeanors, including criminal trespassing, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and theft of less than $300.
Under Colorado’s criminal code, conspiracy and criminal possession of more than two identification documents are considered felonies.
The Rifle Police Department said no further information would be released while the investigation is ongoing, and Rep. Boebert did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Forbes.
KEY BACKGROUND
Tuesday’s charges against Tyler Boebert are only the latest arrest in the embattled congresswoman’s family in 2024 so far. In January, Boebert’s ex-husband Jayson Boebert was charged with assault, disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, and obstructing a peace officer for two fights in early January—one with the couple’s 18-year-old son, and another with the congresswoman at a restaurant in Silt, Colorado. The congresswoman was also briefly investigated after her ex-husband claimed she punched him in the face, but police later dismissed the allegations due to a “lack of any evidence.” Boebert has since been granted a temporary restraining order against Jayson.
TANGENT
The turmoil in Boebert’s personal life comes as the firebrand congresswoman attempts to run for re-election in a new district. Boebert was first elected to congress in 2020 in Colorado’s 3rd district, a Republican-leaning region situated in the western and southern portions of the state. Although the district still leans Republican, Boebert was only narrowly re-elected in 2022, beating her Democratic rival Adam Frisch by less than 600 votes. In December 2023, Boebert announced that she would be moving to Colorado’s 4th district instead—a safer Republican district, whose longtime Rep. Ken Buck announced his retirement in November 2023. “It’s the right move for me personally, and it’s the right decision for those who support our conservative movement. This is the right move for Colorado, for us,” Boebert said in her announcement video. She said the move was partially motivated by the “difficult year for me and my family,” but also blamed the “Hollywood elites” she accused of targeting her in the 2022 election.
