Democratic voters and leftists expressed their dismay that Donald Trump’s would-be assassin was not successful after the former president narrowly escaped a bullet on Saturday. The hashtags “How do you miss” and “one job” circulated on X shortly after the incident, which encompassed thousands of accounts criticizing the shooter’s aim, who has been identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
Notable leftist lawmakers, commentators, and journalists expressed sadness on social media about Trump’s survival. This follows years of aggressive anti-Trump rhetoric from members of the Democratic Party, who compared Trump and his supporters to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis repeatedly, some even calling for Trump’s assassination in the past.
Tyler Barbieri, a top official for New York City Mayor Eric Adams’s Department of Management and Budget, posted on his Instagram story: “Too bad he missed.”
Jess Branas, a Pennsylvania city councilwoman and state Democrat staffer, wrote on Facebook: “A for effort.”
Karen Pinder, a professor at the University of British Columbia in the Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences, wrote on X: “Damn, so close. Too bad.” She then doubled down and said: “What a glorious day it could have been!”
Ashley Nerbovig, a journalist for Seattle-based far-left publication The Stranger, wrote on X: “make america aim again.” Nerbovig has since deleted her social media accounts and The Stranger released a statement condemning political violence. Her author page no longer appears on the publication’s website.
Additional, radical posts made by anti-Republican Trump-haters included calls for a civil war and the praising of the innocent victim who was killed by the gunman while shielding his wife and daughter from bullets. The victim has been identified as former Buffalo Township fire chief, Corey Comperatore.
Conservatives were quick to share social media receipts of prominent Democrats’ demands for political violence in recent years, including past comments made by notorious Democratic commentator Keith Olbermann who wrote: “There’s always the hope” that Trump would be assassinated.
This comes after former President Trump was shot during an assassination attempt at his rally in Bulter, Pennsylvania on Saturday. Crooks was on top of a roof about 130 yards from the stage. His attack killed Corey Comperatore and left others wounded. Authorities said he likely acted alone and later reportedly found explosives in his house and vehicle.
